YA Literary Halloween Costumes

Smarty Pants Katiecoops lists Halloween costume ideas inspired by her favorite characters from young adult literature.

YA Literary Halloween Costumes

Still haven't figured out what to be for Halloween? Smarty Pants Katiecoops to the rescue! She rarely drinks (but we still love her), although she's been known to enjoy a White Russian. She also recently started sewing her own dresses and twirly skirts! TWIRL FOR US, KATIECOOPS! TWIRL!

Guys, there are only like four days until Halloween! And as avid YA readers and lovers of all the unique characters contained therein, it is our DUTY to dress up as a character from a YA book for Halloween! Here are some of my ideas:

Tiny Cooper from Will Grayson, Will Grayson

Supplies: bright, shiny, flamboyant clothing; a notebook full of scribblings about your musical; a microphone; an entourage of boys

Katniss from The Hunger Games

There are several different Katnisses you could be:

Girl on Fire supplies: unfortunately, Cinna doesn't exist (because he's too PERFECT to live in our world!) so you can't have an amazing costume like hers, but you can definitely evoke it with a black outfit and red, orange and yellow accents. Bonus points if you carry sparklers with you.

Tribute Katniss supplies: a plain pair of pants, shirt, jacket, and a backpack or a jumpsuit with an inflatable belt. Maybe one of those long skinny blue balloons would work.

Wedding Katniss supplies: go to Goodwill or any thrift store, pick out a wedding gown. The wedding dresses there are almost all sleeved and covered in pearl beads which is perfect for Katniss's dress.

Frankie from The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks

Supplies: OK, I have to admit here that I don't have a copy of the book in front of me and I can't remember if she has to wear a uniform at her boarding school, but let's just go with yes, she does. (Please correct me in the comments!) Wear a white button-down shirt and a plaid skirt and carry around a blue envelope with a red basset hound on it. Or just wear a HUGE bra.

Ponyboy, Soda Pop or Johnny from The Outsiders

Supplies: straight-leg light-wash jeans, a tight cut-off black or white t-shirt and a black leather jacket or denim button-up overshirt. Also, slick back your hair. YES.

Cyd Charisse from Gingerbread, Shrimp and Cupcake

Gingerbread supplies: Cyd's outfit always includes her clunky black motorcycle boots, so no matter what else you wear, those are a necessity. Take a cue from the cover and wear black and white striped tights and a short, all black skirt and top.

Shrimp supplies: Cyd has exchanged her motorcycle boots for bare feet in the sand while she watches Shrimp surf. She's still in all black, but is a little more feminine and grown-up: maybe include an apron since she is a barista in this book.

Cupcake supplies: Again, taking a cue from the cover, a pink dress (also with an apron, since she works in a bakery and coffee shop) and cupcakes! This outfit also works for Penny from Cupcake Queen or if you just want everyone to think you're the sweetest person at the party!

Bea from How to Say Good-bye in Robot

Supplies: you can take it literally and dress as a Robot Girl like her radio name, or dress like she did for the Party for People from the Future (again, I'm so sorry I don't have the book with me or I'd look it up! Please tell us in the comments!)

Susan "Stargirl" Caraway from Stargirl

Supplies: a kimono, Native American clothing, flapper dress or pioneer dress, bag with a large sunflower painted on it, pet rat, ukelele. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO. To really get in character, be super nice to everyone all night long and if there is ever a game played, cheer for both sides.

Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables

Supplies: red wig in two braids (since it's a constant source of consternation to Anne that she isn't old enough to wear her hair up), a blue dress with PUFFY SLEEVES, a book, cordial and preferably a besotted boy over whose head you break a slate.

The Baby-sitters Club and Sweet Valley High

Go raid a thrift store (or your own closets) for awesome 90s fashion and go as Kristy, Mary Ann, Claudia or Stacey from The Baby-sitters Club or find a friend and go as Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield.

What would you wear as Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldi from The Princess Diaries? What about Jessica Darling from the Sloppy Firsts series? What other characters do you have brilliant ideas for?
