Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t read the first two books in the series, SPOILERS for those books ahead!

Cover Story: Brown Bag It

These poor books. Their covers just don’t get any better. And still have nothing to do with the actual story. What is she even doing, there? Trying to pin the rose onto her dress? What does that have to do with anything anyway? The only place I would feel comfortable carrying this book around would be a goth club. Because of all the black.

The Deal

Luce has just stepped through a Shadow to escape all the drama going on in her back yard, and to try to figure out exactly WHY she and Daniel love each other. So she’s going to travel back in time until she figures it out.

Meanwhile, Daniel is one step/Shadow behind her, determined to bring her safely back to the present.

BFF Charm: Eventually

BFF Charm with a sweatband on

As I’ve explained in my reviews of Fallen and Torment, I’ve always liked Luce, but she’s been a bit of a dim bulb, so I haven’t felt comfortable handing over my charm. Maybe she just wore me down, but by the end of this book, I felt like she was actually starting to GET IT, and I was so, so proud, you guys.

So while I personally wouldn’t be jumping into any Shadows after her like her BFFs in the book, I’d definitely be there waiting when she returned with some ice cream and a few cocktails to fortify her, because even though this is the third book in the series, shizz is about to get REAL.

Swoonworthy Scale: 6

I, like Luce, was curious to see exactly WHY she and Daniel were so eternally devoted to one another, but this book didn’t really convince me. It DID convince Luce, however, and I think that’s a good thing, so I’m okay with it. Still, I felt the swoon dip, just a bit.

ONE THING that I love, love loved was how the author kept referring to Luce seeing Daniel ‘in all his glory’ — is there such a thing as ‘Angel humor’? — because that gave me a chuckle. Every time.

Talky Talk: Straight Up

Lauren Kate writes a compelling, mysterious romance. It keeps me coming back for more, and doesn’t leave me disappointed. This book series is one that might not make me twirl around crying ‘The hills are alive!’, but I can say without reservation that I will read the next one in the series, because they are actually enjoyable, and not just because I got tricked and teased (City of Fallen Angels, I’m looking at you) and HAVE to know what happens next. Although I DO have to know what happens next.

Bonus Factor: Time Travel

A group of teens huddled together with light swirling around them and a city on the horizon, in a scene from Project Alamanac

Time Travel is so much fun!!!! And what with the HUMONGOUS possibility of messing up the space/time continuum and wiping out her very existence, (that we, the readers got, but Luce? Not so much…) you could cut the suspense with a knife.

Bonus Factor: Gargoyles

You guys! I LOVE gargoyles!!!! They’re so awesome, up there on their perches, protecting their buildings from evil and pigeon shit! I love the idea that they come to life when they’re needed, or at night, and I don’t care which mythology is used — they can be good or bad, who cares?!!

Relationship Status: This Book and I Are Dating, But We Aren’t Exclusive Or Anything

So when I first started going out with this book, I was afraid that if things went south, I’d lose my favorite coffee shop — where it worked — in the breakup. But THEN the book’s band took off, and they’re doing a North American tour!!!! So when it is back home between gigs, we hang out and hook up, and it’s totally awesome, but we both agreed that while it’s away, it’s away, so we’re not, like, ONLY seeing each other. Best thing about this arrangement? I still get a latte for the price of a coffee at the coffee shop, because all of this book’s coworkers know it and I are dating.

FTC Full Disclosure: I received neither money nor cocktails for writing this review (dammit!). Passion is available now.
