Greetings FYAers! It's Friday, that magical day that kicks off those two other magical days of rest and relaxation and consumption of adult beverages! "Monday?" (you ask, if you are one of the writers of FYA, or) "Wednesday? Possibly?" But no, it's the start of the weekend! And what are weekends for (apart form the above mentioned consumption) but reminiscence?
That's why I'm kicking off our new series: My First Time With, where we talk about the first time we discovered a particular author's works, and how they made us feel when we discovered them, and how they affected our lives, and why we'll all love them for all eternity. And what better author to begin this series than the one, the only, the inimitable Sarah Dessen!
So due to the highly scientific nature of this blog, we're going to break it down into quantifiable categories for all of you:
My First Time With Sarah Dessen
Date: December, 2010
Location: At work, in Austin TX
How We Met: There's this lovely little lady known around these parts as Poshdeluxe, who has been known to spout such statements as: "You haven't read Sarah Dessen yet?!!! What the cuss?!!!!" so I'd had Ms. Dessen in my queue for some time. After finishing Megan McCafferty's Sloppy Firsts series, I was longing (and I do mean longing) for some realistic fiction, so trusting Posh's advice, I downloaded The Truth About Forever onto my Kindle.
What It Was Like: In short, angels sang, hearts were held in palms, and I learned the meaning of sa-woon!!! Let me explain: When I was introduced to Macy, I thought, "YES!!!!" because, I too am a girl who is much more comfortable keeping a stiff upper lip , keeping calm, and carrying on, and so on. In other words, I connected with Macy SO MUCH! And then Dessen brought in her genius descriptions of working in catering, which I've never done, but I HAVE worked in a coffee shop, and you guys, it was EXACTLY THE SAME! With all of the stress and the fun and the in-jokes and the great friends. And don't even get me started on Wes! WES!!!! Seriously, the boy drips of MLD with a heart of gold, and Dessen manages to weave her characters into a story that is both plausible and oh-so delightful to read. I laughed, I swooned, I cried, it became a part of me.
But what about you? What was your first time with Sarah Dessen like? Follow our format and tell us in the comments!
