Dream Girls: A Boy’s List of Swoonworthy YA Characters

At the DFW book club meeting for Sloppy Firsts, after discussing whether or not Marcus Flutie would qualify as a book boyfriend, I was asked whether or not guys had book girlfriends. At the time I hadn’t really given it much thought, but after rereading The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, I began to see the characters as I would have seen them if I went to high school with them. So here is a list of my top three girls I would have crushed on in high school.

1. Frankie Landau-Banks from The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks

Who she is:

Frankie is a high school sophomore at the prestigious Alabaster Prep where both her father and older sister graduated. She managed to make it through her freshman year without making any waves but now that she has filled out, she attracts the attention of the popular and dreamy Matthew Livingston. Frankie, however, is not content to just coast by on her good looks and her boyfriends popularity. Frankie is determined to shake up the minds of her fellow classmates through a series of elaborate pranks that highlight the problems with the elitist WASP patriarchy of a school.

Why she's hot:

Frankie’s pranks are the reason she is at the top of my list. The pranks aren’t done with malicious intent and they are so freaking clever. I know I could never have pulled anything like Frankie’s pranks off when I was in high school. Granted if I actually went to high school with Frankie, I would have been way too intimidated to talk to her.

2. Jane from Will Grayson, Will Grayson

Who she is:

Jane is one of Tiny Coopers friends through the Gay Straight Alliance at Will and Tiny’s high school. Will and Jane meet while attending a secret show for their favorite band where Will is impressed with her knowledge of obscure music.

Why she's hot:

What isn’t to love about Jane? She is obsessed with music and actually knows about Schrodinger’s Cat. And unlike most of John Green’s female characters, Jane is pretty down to earth and believable.

3. Alex from Ashes

Who she is:

In order to come to terms with her own impending mortality and to say goodbye to her parents, Alex takes takes one final hiking trip as far away from civilization as she can get. After several days out on the trail a bright flash lights up the sky and Alex passes out. Unknown to Alex, the flash wipes out every computerized system and kills billions. The survivors are no longer necessarily human either.

Why she's hot:

First of all, Alex is an outdoor nut. Camping, hiking, wilderness survival you name it, this girl is prepared. I've done a lot of hiking and camping, and finding a girl that loves to do that as well is awesome.

So who are your book girlfriends or boyfriends and what makes them so special?
