A Tale of Two Summer Showdowns

In 2013, DC readers and writers went head to head in a YA photo scavenger hunt; this summer, all of FYA is invited to join!

A Tale of Two Summer Showdowns

Listen: I know that Forever Young Adult breeds a very special sort of book club, full of very awesome members. I have seen photographic evidence—all you other book clubs, across nation and sea, look like each city's collection of Very Best People. Your meetings would be my first stop if I moved to town, fo' realz.

HOWEVER. Last summer I wrangled all our DC book clubbers into participating in a harebrained, summer-long scheme to compete against local YA writers in a photo-based scavenger hunt, and the FYA readers in our nation's capital stepped UP. By the end of the summer, we had two tumblrs with thousands of photo, playlist, haiku, puzzle, and craft submissions, as well as a wrap party table filled with 5+ types of cupcake from Sarah Ockler's Bittersweet, *2* playbills to Tiny Cooper's debut production of Tiny Dancer, a Pagoda Pizza pizza box, Camp Half-Blood beads, and multiple YA roller derby team rosters.

Clockwise from L to R: How to Train Your Dragon (DC MafYA), Sash (Dash) & Lily's Book of Dares (DC MafYA), Matched (FYA DC), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (FYA DC)

We also pulled off an epic Ya Mixology Cocktail-Off, with the readers' "Rosé Under Fire" drink winning the twitter attention of FYA favorite Elizabeth Wein, herself.

Basically, DC proved to me it is the very best club out there.

But they will not rest on their laurels! This summer, the DC readers AND writers are challenging every FYA club who wants to participate to compete in the expanded 2014 FYA Summer Showdown. The competition will take place over the course of 8 weeks this summer, from late June to late August, and all you need to play is a handful of local members and access to tumblr. To get a sneak peek of what the 2014 Showdown might throw at you (and to read over the game rules and the 2013 photo challenge list), check out the DC MafYA team tumblr from 2013.

Mandy W. and I will be your Showdown Overlords, and Catie will be joining in as co-puzzle master. We will be getting in touch with book club leaders this week, but leave a comment here if you are interested in participating—we will need a team captain for each club, and it does not necessarily need to be the same person as the regular club leader. Also, if we have a strong enough showing of free agents (readers in cities with no book club), we will work out a way for y'all to have a free agent team—WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY.

See you at the Showdown…

Want to join an FYA Book Club? We've got locations worldwide! Don't have one near you? Grab a cocktail, send us an email and start one today!

Alexis.'s photo About the Author: Alexis grew up in Wyoming, where she did NOT ride horses to school, but did write her IB extended essay on the youth of heroism in Peter Pan and Stargirl. In spite of this, she was shocked years later to realize how seriously she loved YA lit (blame the snobbery of academia for the blindness). She now lives in Washington DC, where she reads so much YA and MG she built a whole scavenger hunt around it.
