#YASummerShowdown 2014, Week 6: Mashup Up Up and Away!

Mandy and Catie took the reins for the Week 6 challenge, and YAngelists across the continent DELIVERED.

#YASummerShowdown 2014, Week 6: Mashup Up Up and Away!

Previously: Week 5 (Do You Believe in Magic?)

So almost as soon as the Showdown started, Mandy and Catie had this brainhurricane for YA mashups. They came up with a list of like, 100 titles*, and only stopped because they wanted to leave some for the Showdown teams themselves to do. The opportunities for great YA title mashups are so numerous that we had enough of our own to populate a cover challenge AND a blurb puzzle, and were STILL able to offer bonus points for original mashup titles from each club without fear of having used up all the good ones.

*if you ask nicely, Mandy MIGHT even make a public doc of that list for everyone's amusement. Unless she has plans for them for future years' challenges…

So, in the order listed…

Challenge Part 1: Covers of books from the mashup list

The teams' main challenge this week was to create the covers for this made up YA mashups. Mandy W will be posting the Cover Stories for each of these Covertastic Mashups later in the summer. I've seen a couple, and oh man, do y'all have something to look forward to!

In the meantime, we're asking for another vote from YOU GUYS for your favorite Mashup cover of all:

Blurb Puzzles

There were thirteen of these in all, with a 14th TRIPLE TITLE BONUS, but I'll just leave the first five here as a teaser…

1)  Four best friends/pathological liars pass a clothing item back and forth as they make out with their soccer coaches, run for princess in their town’s annual festival, etc.

2)  The young author of a work of popular metafiction is taken to a magical land where she must enlist the help of a wyverary, a naiad, and a dreamy Starbucks employee to get back home to Nebraska.

3)  A girl leaves a box outside a boy’s house. Inside is a collection of souvenirs from their doomed relationship, and a set of cassette tapes detailing how things went so very badly.

4)  While at boarding school in Paris, a girl meets a boy her perfect older sisters would never approve of.

5)  A sixteen year old werewolf falls for a boy with a mission to hunt down and destroy vengeful spirits.

You clever FYA readers have any guesses?

Challenge Part 2: Make-a-Mashup!

…which was really one of the bonuses, for teams to invent their own mashup titles. And here is where they SUPER delivered. (Some of these are repeats from the covers above, as the teams were given the choice to use one of the provided titles for their cover, or to use one of their own invention)

#ATXFYA: CITY OF BONES OF FAERIE

#FYAFreeAgents: THE TYRANT'S DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE

#FYAPGH: STARDUST AND DECAY

#FYANYC: NICK 7 NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST FOR A BROKEN HEART

#FYAON: SWEET EVIL LIBRARIAN

#FYAPDX: THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE AS WE KNOW IT

#SFFYA: THE PERKS OF BEING WALLFLOWERS IN THE ATTIC

#FYAVBC: WILD AWAKE AT DAWN

#FYAVWA: UNDER THE NEVER SKY IS EVERYWHERE

…and, finally, this magnificent beast:

#FYADC: THE SUBTLE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO THE F**K TO SLEEP NO MORE THAN THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE AS WE KNEW IT'S NOT SUMMER WITHOUT YOU ARE HERE AFTERWORLDS (and a bonus bonus just for kicks: LAIR OF DREAMS OF GODS AND MONSTERS OF MEN)

…which Mandy loved so much she made these cover collages:

In non mashup news, the Photo Hunt continues!

…and welcomes #FYAMAD to the official Photo Hunt race! We love that this has been the first of most teams' Photo Hunt essays. Dancing together is loving YA together, I think is what the wise They say.

Some more Hunt highlights? Vancouver, WA went all medieval for GRAVE MERCY…

San Fran hosted a Cocktail Scheming party and, of course, knocked out a billion more hunt items along the way, including ETIQUETTE AND ESPIONAGE…

And FYANYC and FYAPGH went cover redux mad (to our intense delight)…

top from FYANYC, bottom from FYAPGH (the second being THE NEAR WITCH)

And FYAPGH went even further in their bid for our hearts with…

…the return of Little Lord FYA, who would like to say to all of us: "Kitty Kat!" (seen here in a rendition of LAST NIGHT I SANG TO THE MONSTER)

And if THAT isn't the best note to end this week's recap on, I don't know what is.

Stay tuned for more team profiles here on FYA, and lots of library love this week at the Showdown hub!

Next: Week 7 (Library Love)

Alexis.'s photo About the Author: Alexis grew up in Wyoming, where she did NOT ride horses to school, but did write her IB extended essay on the youth of heroism in Peter Pan and Stargirl. In spite of this, she was shocked years later to realize how seriously she loved YA lit (blame the snobbery of academia for the blindness). She now lives in Washington DC, where she reads so much YA and MG she built a whole scavenger hunt around it.
