10 Things You Never Knew About Pakistan

Pakistan is a country with warm people, a rich past, and beautiful landmarks and scenery. Oftentimes, because of the difficult situations that occur within its borders, people fail to realize just how complex Pakistan truly is. In Written in the Stars, though Naila, the main character, endures a harrowing ordeal in Pakistan when her parents force her into a marriage against her will, she does value her Pakistani culture and the beautiful aspects of the country. Below are ten interesting facts about Pakistan that you might not have known.

1. The Indus Valley, known as the cradle of civilization, is located in Pakistan.

2. The second highest mountain peak on earth, the staggering K2, is also located in Pakistan. [photo credit here]

3. For almost a decade, Pakistan held the record for the world’s tallest cake. It was over 105 feet!

4. Pakistan has the world’s largest non-profit social welfare organization, the Edhi Foundation. It was founded by Abdul Sattar Edhi, a humanitarian who devotes his life to helping the underserved. He started ambulance services in Pakistan and now his ambulances are in China, Japan, Canada, and even in the United States.

5. Pakistan is about the size of Texas but has the sixth largest population in the world.

6. Truck art is a huge cultural art form in Pakistan and truck owners spend serious money for beautiful works with poetry and depictions of history and heroes. [photo credit: here]

7. There are more than sixty different languages spoken in Pakistan.

8. One of the largest deserts in the world, the Thar Desert, is in Pakistan. Although the exact age of the desert is a matter of some controversy, it could be up to 10,000 years old!

10. Pakistan has the second largest and one of the oldest salt mines on earth, dating back to 320 BC! [photo credit here]
