#YASummerShowdown 2015, Week 8: Mischief Managed

PreviouslyBlame It On the A-A-A-A-A-A-Alcohol

Can you believe it, y'all? Showdown 2015 began just a short eight weeks ago, and now it's already OVER. But Showdown isn't about to end without going out in style!

Artifact Hunt

The results of the IRL scavenger hunt of the final challenge are in! Extra pants to ATLFYAATXFYA, FYAON, and PGHFYA for completing the entire Artifact Hunt.

•  Create a dinner party menu that either a YA protagonist would put together for their friends, or that you would put together to celebrate a YA book. (#ya dinner party)

AVLFYA (Undertow by Michael Buckley); ATLFYA (The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater);
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery); SEAFYA (Wonder by R.J. Palacio)

•  Write a letter to a dead YA character. (Inspired by Ava Dellaira's Love Letters to the Dead; #love letters to ya)

Neville looks great, by the way. He’s even started modeling underwear. I don’t know what magic he used on that six pack, but it looks tastier than a chocolate frog on the Hogwarts Express. Speaking of physical appearance, are you sad you never had enough time to get your nose done? I understand that taking over the wizarding world and many years of fruitless Harry Potter assassination attempts can be very taxing on one’s nasal cavity. Sorry if I’m being too nosey.

-- From KCFYA's love letter to a character in Harry Potter

•  Write a poem about your Showdown experience in Sam’s style. (Inspired by Tamara Ireland Stone's Every Last Word, #every showdown word)

But what matters
In the end
Isn’t the points
Isn’t who wins

It’s friendships built
It’s memories made
It’s soaring, everlasting—
Whatever. It’s winning!

-- From ATXFYA's "Scavenging for Glory"

•  Design your own D&D character. (Inspired by Steve Brezenoff's Guy in Real Life; #showdown d&d)

AVLFYA's Bonecrusher; ATXFYA's half-elf, Jinx; PGHFYA's Lania (includes character sheet for her pony!)

•  Wield a sledgehammer, or make a sledgehammer necklace. (Inspired by Katie Coyle's Vivian Apple at the End of the World; #girls with sledgehammers)

•  Take a photo of your high school journal or diary. (Inspired by Sarah Ockler's The Book of Broken Hearts; #book of fya broken hearts)

•  Stage Henri and Olivia’s first meeting during his mesmerist performance. (Inspired by Cat Winters' The Cure for Dreaming; #mesmer ya)

•  Create a 24-hour adventure in your hometown, inspired by a movie or book or actor connected to the area if possible. (Inspired by Tucker Shaw's Oh Yeah, Audrey!; #oh yeah fya!)

•  Carve a totem creature from any material. (Inspired by Erin Bow's Plain Kate; #plain fya awesome)

•  Style and wear a Lola outfit. (Inspired by Stephanie Perkins' Lola and the Boy Next Door; #lola and the outfit next door)

•  Write an “Adventure of Black Dove and White Raven” to add to Em & Teo’s canon. (Inspired by Elizabeth Wein's Black Dove, White Raven; #fya adventures of black dove & white raven)

The Queen ordered her taken to the prisons. With a guard on either side of her, she was escorted to a dungeon, and White Raven found out why this was called the Fire Palace. The dungeon was a stream of cells encircling an enormous fire pit. When White Raven dreamed, she saw this pit often, as the gate to Hell.

Congratulations, y'all! (Check the final scoreboard to see the full standings.)

Also, congrats and thanks to each and every team for completing Showdown 2015! None of this would have been possible without your willingness to entertain us, regardless of the ridiculousness that we asked of you. On behalf of your gamemaker council, we hope y'all had as much fun conducting your shenanigans as we did following them, and we've put together a little Showdown Yearbook to thank y'all for the memories!

Speaking of my fellow gamemakers, MAJOR THANKS to our crew of Showdown '14 veterans for all their tireless help: Annie (SFFYA), Corrie (FYA Free Agents/Winslow, AZ), and Kate (FYAVBC/North Shore, MA). And if you or anyone you know is in Winslow or North Shore and wants an FYA Book Club, HOLLER AT US so that we can get those awesome ladies their own book club chapters already!

Finally, one last big thank you to gamemakers Alexis and Catie, who've managed to come up with fun challenges and puzzles for y'all this summer while recapping up a storm for FYA: Pretty Little Liars, Teen Wolf, and Lovely Little Losers (plus the soon-to-return Jane the Virgin). And an extra thanks to Alexis for approaching me so many moons ago to bring the then-DC only competition to all of FYA's book clubs. I doubt that we could have predicted how Showdown would have grown and grown back then, but the ensuing delightful madness was all thanks to your Kristy Thomas-esque great idea to combine a scavenger hunt with YA love.

That's it for #YASummerShowdown 2015, y'all! Can't wait to see what excitement next summer will bring!

Want to join an FYA Book Club? We've got locations worldwide! Don't have one near you? Grab a cocktail, send us an email, and start one today!
