TV Preview: Midseason Shows

Let's discuss the new shows premiering this winter and spring.

TV Preview: Midseason Shows

Back in the day, midseason shows were the shows that just weren’t good enough to air during the fall. Thankfully—I’m looking in your direction, The 100—in this modern age of year-round TV seasons, that’s no longer (always) the case.

As a continuation our TV Preview series, the following will hopefully help you decide if you need to make room on your DVR for these new midseason shows, if you can wait to watch them until they’re added to Netflix, or if you needn’t bother at all.

(Note: The first premiere in the list happened last night, but that’s what On Demand is for!)

Name: The Shannara Chronicles

About: Series of adventures, war, and evil that occur throughout the history of the Four Lands.

Get to Know It: Tuesday, Jan. 5 on MTV

Known Associates: Austin Butler (The Carrie Diaries), Poppy Drayton, Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth), Manu Bennett (Arrow), Aaron Jakubenko (Neighbours), Emilia Burns (Terra Nova), John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings), Brooke Williams (Shortland Street), Daniel MacPherson (Neighbours)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang. I love a good fantasy show, and this has it all: magic, elves, pretty people using magic and being elves. Plus, Jean Favreau had a hand in it, which hopefully means good things. Also, it’s on MTV, so you know it’ll be full of drams.

Name: Angel from Hell

About: Allison isn't quite sure if her new friend, Amy, is her guardian angel or a crazy person.

Get to Know It: Thursday, Jan. 7 on CBS

Known Associates: Jane Lynch (Glee), Maggie Lawson (Psych), David Denman (Parenthood), Ginger Gonzaga (Mixology)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Kill. I like the idea, but I have a feeling that Amy’s particular brand of crazy will get old fast.

Name: Shades of Blue

About: The series stars Jennifer Lopez as the main character Harlee Santos, a single-mother FBI agent, who is forced to work in the FBI's anti-corruption task force, whilst dealing with her own financial problems.

Get to Know It: Thursday, Jan. 7 on NBC

Known Associates: Jennifer Lopez (Maid in Manhattan), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas), Drea de Matteo (The Sopranos), Warren Kole (Stalker), Dayo Okeniyi (The Hunger Games), Vincent Laresca (Graceland), Sarah Jeffery (Descendants), Santino Fontana (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang? I think it’s great that Jennifer Lopez is back on TV, and the plot is intriguing, but watching the trailer for this show made me feel like I was watching a trailer for a movie that J. Lo was in back in the early 2000s that was never released.

Name: Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments

About: After her mother is kidnapped, Clary must venture into the dark world of demon hunting in order to find clues that can help her find her mother.

Get to Know It: Tuesday, Jan. 12 on Freeform (formerly ABC Family)

Known Associates: Katherine McNamara (Happyland), Dominic Sherwood (Vampire Academy), Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia, Matthew Daddario (Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List), Harry Shum Jr. (Glee), Isaiah Mustafa (Old Spice commercials), Alan Van Sprang (Reign)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang. It has to be better than The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, right?

Right?

Name: Second Chance

About: A billionaire and a bioengineer bring a dead police officer back to life.

Get to Know It: Wednesday, Jan. 13 on Fox

Known Associates: Robert Kazinsky (True Blood), Adhir Kalyan (Rules of Engagement), Dilshad Vadsaria (Revenge), Tim DeKay (White Collar), Ciara Bravo (Red Band Society), Vanessa Lengies (Glee), Adan Canto (The Following)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang. I will always give science fiction procedurals at least a couple of chances. It’s on Fox, however, and we all know the station doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to supporting this kind of show.

Name: Teachers

About: Teachers shows their hilariously warped perspective as six elementary school teachers trying to mold young minds, even though their own lives aren't really together.

Get to Know It: Wednesday, Jan. 13 on TV Land

Known Associates: Alison Brie (Community)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang. TV Land has done great things with Younger, so I’m going to trust that it’ll do justice to the hallowed profession that is teaching. Of course, being the daughter of a teacher and relative of many others, I’m going to need to laugh with these teachers instead of laughing at them.

Name: Legends of Tomorrow

About: Focuses on time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter, who has to recruit a rag-tag team of heroes and villains to help prevent an apocalypse that could impact not only Earth, but all of time.

Get to Know It: Thursday, Jan. 21 on The CW

Known Associates: Victor Garber (The Flash), Brandon Routh (Arrow), Caity Lotz (Arrow), Arthur Darvill (Doctor Who), Ciara Renée (The Flash), Franz Drameh (The Flash), Dominic Purcell (Prison Break), Wentworth Miller (Prison Break), Falk Hentschel (Reckless)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Marry. The CW does amazing things with comic shows like The Flash and Arrow, and bringing together some of the great characters from both shows and putting them together makes me very excited. Add to that Arthur Darvill wearing a long coat and being a sassy time traveller, and I’m totally on board.

Name: The X-Files

About: A pair of FBI agents investigate the strange and unexplained.

Get to Know It: Sunday, Jan. 24 on Fox

Known Associates: David Duchovny (The X-Files), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Mitch Pileggi (The X-Files), William B. Davis (The X-Files), Robbie Amell (The Tomorrow People), Tom Braidwood (The X-Files), Dean Haglund (The X-Files), Bruce Harwood (The X-Files), Joel McHale (Community), Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Marry. I wasn’t the biggest of X-Files fans when it first aired—I think I was just slightly too young to get how great it was when it started, and then catching up wasn’t really as easy as it is today, with Netflix and the like. But I totally get the love now, and these new episodes are a HUGE deal.

Name: Lucifer

About: Satan takes up residence in Los Angeles.

Get to Know It: Monday, Jan. 25 on Fox

Known Associates: Tom Ellis (Miranda), Lauren German (Chicago Fire), Lesley-Ann Brandt (The Librarians), Kevin Alejandro (Arrow), Rachael Harris (Suits), D.B. Woodside (Suits)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang. I’m not entirely sure how much the DC comic series this show is supposedly based on will actually affect it, but if there’s even a hint of Neil Gaiman’s genius to be found, I need to attempt to find it.

Name: The Magicians

About: A smart young man attends a college of magic in New York.

Get to Know It: Monday, Jan. 25 on Syfy

Known Associates: Jason Ralph (Manhattan), Arjun Gupta (How to Get Away With Murder), Stella Maeve (Chicago P.D.), Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Summer Bishil (90210), Jade Tailor (Murder in the First)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang. According to, uh, someone—I can’t remember who—The Magicians is like a New Adult Harry Potter. (I totally could have made this idea up, too.) I’ve not read the books, so I can’t say for sure, but I’m willing to give it a try to find out.

Name: Recovery Road

About: Centers on Maddie, a party girl and a highly functioning addict who makes the difficult decision to live with other recovering addicts at a rehab facility, while facing the daily pressures of her teenage life.

Get to Know It: Monday, Jan. 25 on Freeform

Known Associates: Jessica Sula (Skins), Sharon Leal (Hellcats), Alexis Carra (Mixology), Daniel Franzese (Mean Girls), David Witts (EastEnders), Kyla Pratt (Dr. Dolittle)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Kill. I suppose I could come to love a show like this—the trailer certainly had me rooting for at least one person *cough*Daniel Franzese*cough*—but I’m just not sure there’s enough in this show to make me want to tune in.

Name: You, Me and the Apocalypse

About: When a group of ordinary people learn that an eight-mile wide comet is on a collision course with Earth, they hunker beneath the town of Slough to watch the end of the world on television.

Get to Know It: Thursday, Jan. 28 on NBC

Known Associates: Mathew Baynton (Yonderland), Jenna Fischer (The Office), Joel Fry (Game of Thrones), Paterson Joseph (The Leftovers), Kyle Soller (Poldark), Rob Lowe (Parks and Recreation), Megan Mullally (Parks and Recreation)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang. The fact that the only promos I could find were from Sky 1 has me guessing that this a British TV series that NBC is re-airing. (At least I hope that’s the case, and not that NBC is remaking yet another British comedy.) I love a good British TV show, and this cast features some amazing actors, so I have hope.

Name: The Family

About: A community is rattled when a politician's son, who was presumed murdered years ago, returns home.

Get to Know It: Thursday, March 3 on ABC

Known Associates: Joan Allen (The Killing), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Liam James (The Killing), Rupert Graves (Sherlock), Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Andrew McCarthy (Lipstick Jungle), Floriana Lima (Allegiance), Margot Bingham (Boardwalk Empire), Madeline Arthur (The Tomorrow People), Grant Show (Melrose Place)

Marry/Bang/Kill: Bang. I went back and forth on this one. One the one hand, I think the mystery is intriguing. On the other, none of the people in the show seem like very good people? I suppose I’ll have to wait (or watch) and see.
