Title: The Vampire Diaries S7.E16 “Days of Future Past”
Released: 2016

Previously: Rayna lures Stefan out of hiding, but it turns out that Damon put her up to it so that he can take Stefan’s place. Also, Matt Donovan became a vampire-hating peen.

What Went Down

We’ve flashed forward now to the moment where Rayna has Stefan all trussed up in Caroline’s news studio in Dallas. Damon wants to spell the scar onto his own body so that Stefan can stop running (although his little jaunt around the world with Valerie looked pretty damn fun). Stefan isn’t having it, escapes, and Rayna is left behind with Damon. She can’t kill him either, not yet anyways, because of some mystical honor code (plot device) that means her sword demands Stefan’s life first.

So how DID Rayna escape from The Armory anyways? Alex blames Enzo (who is looking MIGHTY dapper these days), but it was actually Matt Donovan. Matty, NOOO! We see him crying at Penny’s grave, and I still say it’s a shitty reason to just let Rayna kill Stefan. Speaking of The Armory, they’ve had Nora and Mary Louise imprisoned (separately) these past three years, and they’ve been experimenting on Mary Louise. Charming. Alex tells Nora that if she brings back/kills Enzo that she will give her what she needs to cure Nora. LIAR.

Enzo, it turns out, is VERY interested in learning about a cure for this witch sickness (Bonnie! I hope you’re ok!), and works with Nora to try and rescue her. Rayna shows up, having tracked down Stefan to the same airfield, and stabs him with her magical sword. Meanwhile Nora (who has been marked by Rayna) and Mary Louise (who is dying because there IS no cure) decide to pull a Thelma and Louise and use a spell to implode Rayna’s sword – which is impaled in their CAR – setting their car on fire and killing them both.

Valerie is pissed at Damon; Rayna reminded him that once he takes on Stefan’s scar he will become linked to her – and she only has one life left. That means no reunion with Elena when she “wakes up” upon Bonnie’s death. You can see the wheels spinning in Damon’s mind; he’s become so single-minded when it comes to his life and Elena, but eventually Valerie makes him realize that it was never Elena who humanized him, it was always Stefan. (DAMN STRAIGHT.) They don’t get to Stefan in time; he’s already been stabbed by Rayna, but when her sword explodes along with Mary Louise and Nora we can be sure that we haven’t seen the last of Stefan Salvatore.

Holy CRAP

  • Guys, I’m so sad that Matt Donovan has become the Mystic Falls equivalent of a Donald Trump supporter.

  • They didn’t get any screen time together this week but BONNIE AND ENZO.

  • Rayna could see into Stefan’s life for THREE YEARS while she was imprisoned at The Armory? Um, gross.

  • What is this Witch-bourne illness??

  • Mary Louise and Nora: Badass Bitches Til The Very End.

  • Valerie knew about the Switching Spell all along and didn’t say anything to Stefan?? GIRL. I thought you finally KNEW BETTER.

Vamp(s) of the Week: Nora and Mary Louise

Ladies: I applaud your love for one another AND your bravery. I may have teared up as you recited poetry to each other in your final moments.

NEVER SURRENDER

Hero Hair/Nefarious Grin

Hero Hair: Is it just me or does Enzo’s hair keep getting better and better with each passing episode? True love looks good on you, honeypie. Our Enzo is clearly out to try and help his boo, and he’s not letting Damon or anyone else get in his way. I really can’t wait to see him with his shirt off.

Nefarious Grin: Now I know how Al Pacino felt in The Godfather, Part 2 when he screamed at his brother for breaking his heart. Sure, he killed him later on but that guy kinda had it coming. Not that I’m saying I want Matt Donovan to DIE or anything, but he really does need to dial it ALL THE WAY BACK with his vampire haterade.

Sound Bites

“Hashtag, you’re welcome. Are hashtags still a thing? It’s been three years.” – Damon

“To my eyes, you are perfect.” – Nora [to Mary Louise]

“Now I know why Stefan digs you. You’re a take charge kind of girl.” – Damon
“And you’re a self-serving narcissist.” – Valerie

Burning Questions

  • What the hell is The Armory doing to supernatural humans??

  • What’s going to happen to Rayna now that her sword has been destroyed? Maybe she can retire from being a Hunter and go get herself a part-time job at Home Depot.

  • Is Bonnie ok??

  • How pissed is Stefan going to be when he realizes that Valerie knew the key to helping him all along?

  • Is ANYONE shipping Caroline and Alaric?

Has anyone watched the trailer for next week’s episode? Whoa boy – it’s going to be a doozy. I do enjoy when Paul Wesley gets a chance to really let his acting skills shine. Is anyone else breaking up with Matt Donovan? Come dish with me in the comments!
