Between Two Lockers With Amanda K.

In case you missed the announcement, we’re running a Between Two Lockers special series featuring your fave FYA writers and contributors.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

What’s your name?

Amanda K.

Where are you from/located?

Portland, OR

What do you do when you’re not writing for FYA?

In between consuming disturbing amounts of TV and video games, I write fiction. I'm also a longtime knitter, which is really convenient because I get to indulge my geekery by making stuff like Chthulhu sweaters and dragon scale gauntlets.

What do you look like?

Where can you be found on social media?

Twitter, Instagram, Ravelry

THE ACTUAL YA-RELATED QUESTIONS

How long have you been writing for FYA, and how did you start writing for the site?

One year! I was a devoted attendee of the San Francisco chapter's book club meetings and a couple of the editors (Jennie and Mandy W., hey hey ladies) suggested that maybe my practice of loudly recapping TV shows at the bar might translate well to blogging.

How did you come to read YA as an adult?

I've always liked intense, high-stakes genre stories with believable female leads so it was just a natural fit for me.

Why do you think YA is an important genre, for both actual Ys and those of us who are more A?

First, kickass stories full of raw feelings and great deeds are always important. Also, I love that there is this whole area of literature where people (but most especially women) get to tell and experience the stories they want without having to apologize for it (even though buzzy articles are published several times a year suggesting they should).

What are five of your favorite YA books?

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
Eon/Eona by Alison Goodman
Beauty Queens by Libba Bray
The Assassin's Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

Do you have a favorite YA character or couple? If so, who are they, and why are they The Best?

Eleanor and Park. These two oddballs have all of my heart what with their sharing of headphones and vulnerabilities.

THE YA QUESTIONS

If your real life adolescence was a YA book ... What would you, the main character, be like?

The acerbic nerd counting down the days to graduation, surreptitiously reading Margaret Atwood under her desk in Biology.

Who is your secret crush?

The boy who wears black nail polish, a Diebold lock on a chain around his neck and talks back to teachers using completely logical arguments in a tone of bored insouciance.

What is your number #1 source of angst?

Hiding my secret past as a preteen black-ops CIA agent.

At what point would the reader pump his/her fist in victory?

When I took down the pirate ninjas who were trying to blow up the prom.

And who would play you in the film adaptation?

Shailene Woodley? I mean, she plays everyone else.

THE SLUMBER PARTY QUESTIONS

What is your #1 favorite food?

Gummi bears.

Tell me about your area of expertise.

I am the literal best at procrastination.

If you could assemble your own Ocean's 11 of fictional characters, who would you pick?

Easy. Raylan Givens (Justified), Dean Winchester (obvs), Eric Northman, Alcide Herveaux, Magic Mike, Nick Burkhardt (Grimm), Magiano (The Young Elites), Nathan Drake, Alistair (Dragon Age), Kaiden Alenko (Mass Effect).

My last choice would be Olivia Pope and we would sit together, drinking red wine and eating popcorn while the hot guys argued over how to pull the heist. Later, when they were all tuckered out from posturing, she and I would come up with the perfect plan.

What is your best karaoke song?

“Jolene”

Tell me something scandalous!

Something scandalous!

What is your favorite adult beverage?

Champagne and St. Germain.

What is the most crucial snack food and/or movie/or anything you'd bring to an FYA slumber party?

The tears of our enemies.

What book have you read the most number of times?

Pride and Prejudice

YA authors are so cool. Who would you give a BFF charm to?

Libba Bray. She is so amazing and her books are incredible and she's hilarious, HI I LOVE YOU LIBBA.

Out of all of the characters you’ve read, which one do you most wish you could be?

Adelina Amouteru. I've always wanted (SPOILER) to go full villain.

AND NOW, MASH

Amanda made three picks for each category, and I added a fourth. The magic number (chosen by a random number generator) was 5.

Mandy Curtis's photo About the Author: Mandy is a small town girl living in a nerdy world, or—if you want to get literal—an editor/writer living in Austin, TX. In addition to yearning for YA books—the more dystopian or fantastical, the better—she can also be found swooning over superheroes, dreaming of The Doctor and grinning at GIFs.
