Earlier this month, the NYCFYA Book Club was invited to the launch party for Carrie Firestone's The Loose Ends List. Here's NYCFYA-er Jess with a recap of the night's festivities!
Thanks to an incredible hook up from Little, Brown and FYA HQ, the New York City book club was able to attend the launch party for Carrie Firestone’s beautiful debut novel, The Loose Ends List.
Here’s a quick rundown of the book from Carrie’s website:
Seventeen-year-old Maddie O’Neill Levine’s grandmother is a young-at-heart socialite who has always been Maddie’s go-to confidante. Although Maddie and the rest of her family have learned to expect the unexpected from their matriarch, Gram still manages to shock them all when she announces that she has booked the O’Neill clan on a secret death-with-dignity ship called the Wishwell; Gram has terminal cancer and is determined to leave the world in her own way–and give her family an unforgettable summer of dreams-come-true in the process.
Soon, Maddie is on the trip of a lifetime with her wacky family. Aboard the ship, Maddie bonds with other Wishwellians and falls for Enzo, the son of the ship’s owner, as they travel the globe. But despite the copious laughter, headiness of first love, and wonder of the glamorous destinations, Maddie knows she is on the brink of losing Gram, and she struggles to find the strength to let go in a whirlwind summer shaped by love, grief, and the power of forgiveness.
Are you in? We’re so in!
Book club member Sasha was able to score an advanced copy of the book and had this to say: “Maddie and the whole O’Neill gang have really stuck with me. It’s been over a week, and I’m still wondering what they’re up to! I got so emotionally invested in these characters that by the end of the book, I’d probably gone through at least a half a box of tissues.” Consider yourself warned, this is a DNRIP book.
Now let’s talk about Carrie Firestone. Within minutes, she had welcomed us like close friends, and there were dozens in attendance to show their support. Carrie proved herself to be an incredibly gracious, fun hostess. Friendly and warm, she delivered a heartfelt thank you to all those who had helped her write the book, many of whom were at the party, as well as a list of seven things the book had taught her. You can see that the lovely qualities in this book stem from their lovely author. To help fuel the celebratory mood, Carrie came prepared with name tags, temporary tattoos, themed coasters, and free-flowing cocktails and appetizers.
Carrie had us join her at one of her favorite places, the legendary West Village bar Cafe Wha? It’s a spot where Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Bruce, and Richard Pryor got their starts. Today it’s home to the amazing Cafe Wha? band. Almost immediately the crowd was on its feet dancing in the true spirit of the Wishwell and their motto, “And Still We Dance.”
So many thanks to Carrie and Little, Brown for including us in this beautiful celebration and creating a new Snow Globe Moment.
