FYA Summary:

We previously sang the praises of Wynonna Earp Season 1 last summer. In Season 2, we rejoin our faves as they try to keep their frozen tundra of a town safe from the near constant demon scourge trying to overrun the place. (Think Sunnydale, but colder.)  Wynonna, heir to a familial curse and a magical gun that kills demons, finds herself with a new boss within the secret government division that tracks mystical crimes, and new foes to vanquish. Her partner, Dolls, is dealing with – let’s call it a medical issue, her sister is not acting like herself, and Doc Holliday is maybe not the most dependable sidekick to have around. And that’s before the Big Bad of the season shows up. But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time for some will they or won’t they and oh yeah, they already did, and Wayhaughter shenanigans.

I was lucky enough to go to the Wynonna Earp panel at the ATX Television Festival in June. (You can watch the panel here, but warning: Season 2 spoilers abound!) They had showrunner Emily Andras, as well as Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon, and Kat Burrell in attendance, and it just re-enforced my devotion to this team. I love these people more than most people I know in real life. They’re the best cast, and creative team, so in tandem, accessible, and engaged. They’re outright fans of the show, too, and appropriately grateful for the amount of support they receive. Emily told us that when her daughter was at that age of watching Frozen 4000 times, it inspired her to make the show love story to be between sisters. She envisioned Buffy meets Justified meets Frozen. Oh, and they have more women than men in their writers’ room. How often do you hear that?

Familiar Faces:

Melanie Scrofano as Wynonna Earp

“This girl is gonna murder someone, but I wanna marry her.” Emily Andras’ impression of Melanie’s audition. She told us that she probably saw 300 women for the part of Wynonna. “But I was like who is that batshit princess?” “I want that on my tombstone,” was Melanie’s decree.

Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday

THE Doc Holliday. Tim is so different from Doc when he doesn’t have the mustache. He doesn’t even sound the same. Which tells me, he a really good actor. And we learned that he’ll correct his scripts when the writers use contractions for Doc’s dialogue because Doc never uses them.

Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly Earp

Waverly is Wynonna’s sister, and arguably, the emotional center of the show. Emily said that one of their rules in the writers’ room is that everyone gets their hero moments. Everyone gets to see their flaws become strengths. I can’t wait to see more of that for Waverly most of all.

Shamier Anderson as Xavier Dolls

Dolls is Wynonna’s partner and friend. And he is so great that I feel like we don’t even spend nearly enough time talking about smoking hot he is. And that’s a real crime. Feel free to remedy that in the comments.

Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught

Kat is Waverly’s girlfriend and the town deputy. At ATX Fest, Kat admitted that her mom is such an Earper (superfan) that she cosplays at Earper cons. Is that not the most adorable thing you’ve ever heard?

Varun Saranga as Jeremy Chetri

Jeremy is the newest member of their little task force. At the beginning of Season 2, I was not super into the show “adding a kid” as it were. But Jeremy really grew on me by the end, and really added to the running theme of creating a family of choice.

Tamara Duarte as Rosita Bustillos

Rosita is Doc’s personal mixologist, who is hired to work on a very important serum (among other things). Her accessory game is on point, and I would definitely let her make me a margarita. But is that all she’s up to?

Couch-Sharing Capability: Gather Up Your Adorable Psychos

You can totally watch this show alone, like if the person you happen to live with is super lame and not into genre shows. But really, Wynonna Earp needs to be shared with the world, so do your part, and invite people over! Grab you your genre loving friends, your feminist friends, your friends who appreciate hot guys, or hot girls. Invite your family of choice. Host a whiskey tasting party! See how fun this is?

Recommended Level of Inebriation: Cock Up Those Mocktails

This is one of those times when you should ask yourself: What Would Wynonna Do? She’d drink brown liquor, and all of it. But really, half the show seems like it takes place in a bar, so it seems obvious that the proper way to enjoy Purgatory is with a drink in hand. (This same advice does not apply while trying to take notes at a Wynonna Earp panel.)

Use of Your Streaming Subscription: Timely

In this #MeToo era, patriarchal bullshit land, who doesn’t want to get lost in a fantasy world, where you could have a mystical inheritance, and a kickass crew, that helps you take down the bad guys? They’ve created a world of complicated characters you root for, and even villains that can be sympathetic. (Except for Tucker. Eff that guy.) We deserve to wrap ourselves in the feminist security blanket of acceptance and heroic alcohol tolerance that is Wynonna Earp. What are you even waiting for?

Kandis (she/her) is a proud member of the Austin FYA book club chapter who loves vampires, romance novels, live tweeting CW shows, and Jonah Griggs. She’s not like a regular mom. She’s a cool mom.
