This month’s FYA Book Club selection is Plain Kate by Erin Bow. Check out the discussion questions below! (Slight spoilers ahead.)

P.S. If you’ve already read the book, feel free to add any other discussion questions of your own in the comments!

In Plain Kate‘s world, superstitions carry a lot of weight. Were you influenced by any superstitions when you were growing up? Do you still abide by any superstitions as an adult?

1. On a scale of dry eyes to all of the tears, how much did you cry while reading this book?

2. From the skara rok to the carving magic to the Rusalka, Erin Bow did some serious world-building in this book. What was your favorite fantastical element?

3. If you’re not a fan of fantasy in general: did Plain Kate’s story draw you in, or was this book really not your cup of tea?

4. Linay is obviously a complex character. Did you like him? Hate him? Understand him?

5. Taggle: Best Talking Cat Ever? Discuss.

6. If you were Plain Kate, and you had been mistreated so horribly, would you have tried to save Lov, or would you have let it burn?
