This month’s FYA Book Club selection is The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He. This “climate fiction” dystopian novel is a fascinating look at a possible future and the power of sisters.

Check out the discussion questions below! (Slight spoilers ahead.)

P.S. If you’ve already read the book, feel free to add any other discussion questions of your own in the comments!

Icebreaker

Kasey remembers her trips to the ocean with Celia with trepidation, but Celia certainly enjoyed them. Do you have any fond vacation memories with your siblings (or, if you don’t have siblings, with other family members)?

Questions

1. For all its outward shininess, the eco-city Kacey and Celia live in has a lot of limitations. Would you still want to live there? Or would you rather live in a land-based territory, even with the dangers?

2. Did you make a connection between Kay and Kasey and Cee and Celia? How accurate were your initial assumptions when all was revealed?

3. Are you more like Kasey or more like Celia?

4. Who did you think Hero was when he first showed up on the island?

5. And what about Actinium?

6. Where did you think Cee was? On an actual island, or somewhere else?

7. Have you read any other cli-fi (climate fiction) books? How did this book compare to other dystopian novels with similar themes?

8. What did you think of Kacey’s plan to only wake up certain people? Was she the right person to decide who those people were?

9. The ending to the book is open-ended. Do you think Cee rescued Kacey, thereby saving the human race?

Mandy (she/her) is a manager at a tech company who lives in Austin, TX, with her husband, son, and dogs. She loves superheroes and pretty much any show or movie with “Star” in the name.
