Over the past few weeks, y’all have made some extremely tough decisions in our YA Adaptation Madness matchups. The 32 books/series we started with are all worthy contenders for adaptations, but it had to come down to just one winner. And so, without further ado, I present to you the 2023 YA Adaptation Madness winner …
Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle!
With 64% of the vote, The Raven Cycle won over Sarah Dessen’s The Truth About Forever.
Now that we’ve determined which book we want to see on screen, let’s have some fun with dreaming up said adaptation. Who would your dream cast be? What scenes and/or bits of dialogue would have to be included to make it the perfect adaptation? Is there anything you’d be OK with the powers that be cutting, knowing that not everything can be included? The sky’s the limit! Take it to the comments and let’s play.
While we had some major upsets along the way, I always figured THE RAVEN BOYS would emerge victorious! The thing that makes me cool with the idea of it being adapted is that nailing the story has little to do with special effects or movie magic; it’s about the casting and the script (and I assume Maggie Stiefvater would be involved in the latter). And unlike, say, the impossibility of casting a Marcus Flutie, I truly believe there are actors out there who could fully capture these characters, even Ronan! I know the TV series fell apart but damn that would’ve been perfect; there’s so much to explore in these books, and an HBO prestige drama type show would be the only way to do it justice.
I, too, am not surprised. Especially thinking about how much excitement was when the TV series was announced. Someone get on the phone to Max—they need new shows! (We really do not need a 10–15 year HP show.)
I feel like any adaption would *require* Will Patton in some form, only because he did such a wonderful job with the audiobooks for The Raven Cycle as well as The Dreamer Trilogy. Maybe as Colin Greenmantle, or The Gray Man.
Later books, but I think after seeing Denise Gough’s role in Andor, she would make an excellent Piper. Would require the line, “Make it so, or whatever.”
Those are about the only roles I have fan cast in my mind, though another thing I would want is to know that every person Declan dates is named Ashley. Maybe early in the movie, there’s an Ashley he’s with, but then later, it’s a different Ashley, and so on. 😀
OMG I *love* your Ashley idea.
I bet you Patton would want to be involved! He loves the books (per Maggie herself).
