I just finished watching Red, White, & Royal Blue, and I’m already plotting my next viewing. (Spoiler: it’s tomorrow.)
There are always changes to be made when adapting a book into a movie, and this is no exception. The director talked about that here, though personally I would have welcomed a 3 hour movie in this instance. Overall, the movie totally works as both an adaptation that hits all the right notes and a great movie on its own merits. As a devoted fan of the book, I was delighted to spot so many book moments (all the important ones, really) and various book quotes in the movie.
Regardless how long you’ve been a fan of Alex and Henry, everything is more fun with a drinking game! Grab your favorite cocktail and settle in to make some history.
Take a drink:
- Every time someone makes a sexual innuendo
- For Alex’s ridic eyelashes
- Every time Henry fiddles with his signet ring
- Every time Zahra kicks ass
- When Philip is a stock photo
- For Alex’s Texas memo
- For David the beagle
- Every time Uma’s accent makes you wince
- When you see a transatlantic flight on screen
Take two drinks:
- When Cornbread the turkey appears
- When Alex is reading Casey McQuiston’s One Last Stop
- When Nora helps Alex assess his sexuality
- For the Red Room
- When you see Rachel Maddow on screen
Take a shot for:
- “History, huh? Bet we can make some.”
- Dancing to Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz’ Get Low
Finish your drink:
- When election night comes to an end
Pour one out for:
- The PowerPoint, especially the slide “Federal Funding, Travel Expenses, Booty Calls, and You”

We published this review during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. This work would not exist without the labor of writers and actors, and we support their goals.
I haven’t seen it yet, but the PowerPoints made me laugh out loud in the book so I was hoping they made it into the show!
Same! I’m glad they at least referenced it in the movie, because the slides in the book were hilarious.
