This month’s FYA Book Club selection is None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney. Set in the early 80’s, this historical fiction (ouch) novel is the story of a serial killer’s only survivor and her work with the FBI to help catch other serial killers.

None Shall Sleep is a book about serial killers and an open serial killer case, with visits to the crime scenes and details of past killings, as well as depictions of one of the main characters’ own experience with being held by a serial killer.

None Shall Sleep is a fictionalized true crime novel set in the 80s. Are you a true crime fan? If yes, do you have a “favorite” real-life case? If no, what about true crime do you dislike?

  1. What were your initial feelings about Emma and Travis? How did those feelings change as the book progressed?
  2. Marney has said that she wrote Emma Lewis with Clarice Starling (Silence of the Lambs) in mind. Did you find her different enough or too similar?
  3. Simon Gutmunsson is both a fascinating character and an absolute villain. Do you want to learn more about him?
  4. Although there isn’t much swoon in this book, there are some hints that there might be something between Emma and Travis. Do you want to see them together? Why or why not?
  5. How do you feel about the relationship between Simon and his sister, Kristen?
  6. Was the idea of teenagers working with the FBI realistic? If not, was it easy to suspend your disbelief for the sake of a good reading experience?
  7. What did you think about the 1980s setting? Would this book would have worked as well if it was set in modern times?
