I’ve had “salt air, and the rust on your door, I never needed anything more” stuck in my head for the last two days, so it must be August!

ICYMI on FYA

The August FYA book club pick is T. Kingfisher’s A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking, and I’m already pondering the icebreaker question.

Mandy W. recapped episode 1.10, “It’s Different for Girls,” in our Friday Night Lights rewatch this week.

In this week’s Stream It, Stephanie reviewed season 1 of Why Women Kill, a show with a fairly stacked cast of actors you’ll recognize from various other projects.

In book reviews:

  • Mandy C. reviewed Hemant Nayak’s A Magic Fierce and Bright, a fantastical ride of a book.
  • Mandy C. also reviewed Chatham Greenfield’s Time and Time Again, a timely read about a character who keeps getting stuck on August 6.

Book-Related Things

RIP Francine Pascal, creator of the Sweet Valley High books. I think it’s safe to say that her books influenced everyone here at FYA HQ and beyond.

Rainbow Rowell’s new book, Slow Dance, just came out this week, and you can read an excerpt of it.

Check out this interview with Sarah Rees Brennan about her new book, Long Live Evil, which came out this week elsewhere but releases in the US later in a few weeks.

Casey McQuiston is Trojan-Horsing trans romance with their new book, The Pairing, out next week.

Casey McQuiston also reminds everyone that romance books are literature like any other genre.

Onscreen Things

Maya Rudolph will be playing Kamala Harris on SNL through the 2024 election cycle.

There’s going to be a Britney Spears biopic based on her memoir, The Woman in Me, and I’m dying to find out who eventually gets casted in it.

We have a trailer for the new Wynonna Earp movie!

AMC released a teaser for season 3 of Interview with the Vampire, which will follow Anne Rice’s The Vampire Lestat, and if you haven’t watched the first two seasons yet, what are you waiting for?

AMC also released the full song in the teaser, which is sung by Sam Reid (who plays Lestat), and it is brilliant and have I mentioned you should be watching this show yet?

Social Media Things

In a turn of events nobody could have expected to come from the above Interview with the Vampire content, an online tussle erupted between fans of the show and fans of Taylor Swift. Yes, you read that correctly.

Let’s talk about Glen Powell, movie star. You’ll have seen him in Everybody Wants Some!!, Set It Up, Twisters, and more.

The only thing better than Buzzfeed’s puppy interviews is their much smaller segment of kitten interviews, but this one is awfully cute.

The guy who plays Dancepool in Deadpool & Wolverine posted a video of his opening scene. Whether you’ve seen the movie yet or not (it’s hilarious btw), you’ll probably want to watch this more than once.

Who doesn’t want to watch a charming story about this walrus?

@thatgoodnewsgirl

When Wally the wayward walrus drifted south from the Arctic to Ireland and then took a solo vacation across western Europe, he took to lounging on boats, often sinking them. 🛥️ Instead of rushing Wally along, people along the coast worked together to provide special floats for Wally as he made his way back toward the Arctic on his own time, including the British Divers Marine Life Rescue crafting a floating couch for him and Seal Rescue Ireland providing him with a Wally-friendly pontoon. 🌊 Wally eventually made his way back home and is believed to now be living a typical walrus life in the Arctic. ❤️ 📸BDMLR / Seal Rescue Ireland / Calypso Boating / sailingsvcaledonia / paulfesty / islandiatravel / Tom Owen / Will Wagstaff / Adam Collins / Cliff Smith / Kris Webb / Gayle Marsh / Scott Reid / Paul O’Sulliven #walrus #wallythewalrus #walrusrescue #marinelife #marinemammals #oceanlife #goodnews

Sometimes the internet is good, and everyone rallying around Stephen Nedoroscik has been one of those times.

This is adorable.

Miscellaneous Things

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are reuniting in a Broadway adaptation of Waiting for Godot next year, what a delightful announcement.

Meredith loves vampires, ridiculous werewolves, and Shadowhunters the most but has a soft spot for a good murder (mystery). When not reading or working, she prefers to make baked goods and cocktails and catch up on TV and movies, sometimes all at once. Meredith resides in Austin with a particularly clingy cat.
