This November, we’re heading to London (three Londons, that is) with our FYA Book Club selection, A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1) by V.E. Schwab. This twisty and fantastical adventure is absolutely captivating, and between the richly crafted world and the complicated characters, there is PLENTY to talk about.
Check out our discussion questions below, and if you’ve already read the book, feel free to add any questions of your own in the comments!
Icebreaker
If there was another version (in a parallel universe) of the city where you live, what’s one element or aspect you would change?
Discussion Questions
- What did you think about Kell, and how did your impression of him change throughout the book?
- Kell’s relationship with the king and queen, as well as Prince Rhy, is complicated to say the least. Did that affect your feelings towards Kell?
- Delilah Bard is certainly a dynamo, but she’s also impetuous. Did you find her to be brave, or just reckless? Is she truly stronger than Kell, or is she just faking it until she makes it?
- How did you feel about Holland as a villain? Did you ever feel sorry for him?
- V.E. Schwab has created such a rich world in this book. What were some of your favorite elements?
- The politics between the three Londons are complex; as you learned more about the history (and the fate of Black London), how did that change your perspective on the countries and their leaders?
- Any theories on how an Antari comes to be? And any guesses on where Kell came from?
- At one point, in referring to the stone, Kell says, “Purity without balance is its own corruption.” Thoughts on that statement? And based on everything that has happened in this world, do you believe that magic is still a good thing?
- Do you think we’ll hear from The Shadows (the group that kidnapped Rhy) again?
- Do you plan to read the next installment in the series?
