Familiar Faces:
Anton Yelchin as Max
I find Anton adorable. It might be because of his role in the new Star Trek movies as Chekov, or it might be his childlike looks. Regardless, there’s something about him that makes me like him, even when he’s acting in a role like that of Max, a guy with very little backbone and even less charm.
Ashley Greene as Evelyn
Although I’ve seen Ashley play an undead character before, Evelyn is a far cry from the sweet Alice Cullen; not only is she a terribly overbearing girlfriend when she’s alive, but also she’s even more clingy after death. This wasn’t the most challenging of roles, but it showed me that Ashley can play both darling and awful pretty well.
Alexandra Daddario as Olivia
The role of Olivia isn’t really an intriguing one, and I feel like Alexandra’s talents were wasted on playing a quasi-Manic Pixie Dream Girl. She did have decent chemistry with Anton, however, which was nice?
Couch-Sharing Capability: Depends
Do you have friends who love cheesy zombie films? What about movies that they can watch with half of their brain? Those are the friends you’d want to watch Burying the Ex with. If you don’t have friends like that, but still want to check this out, I’d probably watch it alone.
Recommended Level of Inebriation: High
I didn’t have anything to drink while watching Burying the Ex except for a glass of iced tea, but I was really wishing for something a little harder by time 30 minutes had passed. I could have used a dulling of the senses; perhaps I would have enjoyed the movie more had that been the case.
Use of Your Streaming Subscription: Meh
Burying the Ex is one of those movies that makes for good viewing when you want to watch something, but basically just need background noise to keep you company while you do other things. It puts a new spin on the “crazy ex-girlfriend trope,” but never really grabbed my attention enough or went far enough into the ridiculous for me to find it truly enjoyable.
