Fix: Silly Spies, Terrible Hair Cuts, Unexpected Twists
Platform: Apple TV+
Apple TV+ Summary:
When the plots of her books get too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate, introverted spy novelist Elly Conway and her cat are plunged into the real world of espionage—where nothing, and no one, is what it seems.
FYA Summary:
Elly Conway’s Argylle books are best-sellers multiple times over all across the world. They’re fiction—or so she thought until a spy enlists her to help him figure out how to take down a secret group of evildoers.
Familiar Faces:
Henry Cavill as Argylle, Ariana DeBose as Keira, and John Cena as Wyatt
This isn’t Cavill’s first role as a sexy spy, and it likely isn’t his last. But that haircut. It pains me, physically. I could barely look at Argylle’s face, and that’s saying something.
DeBose has a very small part as the spy team’s tech wizard, but it amuses me that an Oscar winner would be in such a role. I bet she had a blast making this movie.
Supposedly, John Cena was in this movie, but I never saw him.
Sam Rockwell as Aidan Wilde and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway
I loved Rockwell’s take on the not-so-dashing super spy Aidan. And although he’s constantly compared to Cavill, which even the most attractive of people might take an issue with (even with that haircut, which, yes, I will never stop complaining about), he’s still got a charisma that’s hard to deny.
Howard is great as Elly, an introverted author who prefers the company of her cat to that of people. I totally get her and her wish for peace and quiet. And I would KILL for her house, which has giant windows that face a tranquil lake.
Bryan Cranston as Director Ritter
Director Ritter is a megalomaniacal villain who is quick to anger and even quicker to violence. Cranston is perhaps a little too believable in the role, but I loved him in it regardless.
There are other familiar faces in the mix, but these are the major players.
Couch-Sharing Capability: Call the Whole Team
Argylle is the kind of movie that you can share with pretty much anyone, as long as they enjoy a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously. And if they enjoy Matthew Vaughn movies? Even better.
Recommended Level of Inebriation: Comfortably Tipsy
For a silly movie like this, I’d suggest getting a little silly yourself, with your drink of choice. (No need for shaken martinis.) If you don’t drink, you’ll just have to get silly through whatever means work for you.
Use of Your Streaming Subscription:
Apple TV+ is a service filled with all sorts of different things to watch, from Shrinking to Ted Lasso to Foundation. (All of which are excellent.) Argylle is different than any of those, but the fact that there’s something for everyone on the service drives home that it’s worth the added expense, and being able to watch this goofy movie is just a bonus.
Wow, they didn’t market this at all, unless I am living under a rock. This sounds delightful and I will definitely be watching ASAP!
They had it up “coming soon” on TV+ for a while, and it was in theaters for like a minute, but yeah—I rarely saw anything about it. It’s great, though! I think you’d really enjoy it. 😀
I just finished it, and — SPOILER-y, ish? — I was so distracted after a certain point by how canonically Henry Cavill and John Cena should have been making out.
HA, totally.
Hard agree! I finished it over the weekend and this movies was bonkers. 😂 It took me way too long to realize it was the same director as KINGSMEN. It definitely didn’t go where I expected it to halfway through and then it just kept getting wilder!
Right, like I was actually down with a cozy adventure with an awkward author and her cat 😂 and then it went where it did lol
