About:

Title: Dead Boy Detectives
Released: 2024

Fix: Ghostly Young Men Sleuths, Cute British Boys, Psychics, Quirky Mysteries, Meddling Kids
Platform: Netflix

Netflix Summary:

Meet the Dead Boy Detectives: Edwin is the brains and Charles, the brawn. They’ve escaped the afterlife to help restless spirits in the mortal realm.

FYA Summary:

Edwin and Charles are two British young men—dead British young men—who’ve decided to spend their afterlives solving the mysteries of folks like them who are stuck on Earth with unfinished business. Together with Crystal, a psychic, the boys solve cases that no one else can solve, all while avoiding Death—and their own personal traumas.

Familiar Faces:

There was actually only one Familiar Face in this show, but he’s a minor character. So here are the faces that I hope will become familiar.

George Rexstrew as Edwin, Jayden Revri as Charles, and Kassius Nelson

George, Jayden, and Kassius are absolutely delightful in the roles of the three main characters. Edwin is from the early 1900s and is uptight, stubborn (but sweet!), and harboring a secret. Charles is from the 1980s, and is brash, loving, loyal friend with daddy issues. Crystal has lost her memories thanks to her demon ex and so doesn’t know who she is, but she does know that she’s a powerful medium who wants to work with the boys to do good for those who have no other recourse. I hope all three of them have long careers ahead of them. After, of course, a few more seasons of DBD.

Couch-Sharing Capability: High

Do you know people who enjoy a bit of humor with their spooky? Do you have people in your life who don’t love true horror but could handle a YA version? Are any of them fans of adorable British boys who may or may not be each other’s soulmates? Invite ’em all over, ’cause this is a show they’re going to really enjoy.

Recommended Level of Inebriation: Round of Undead Gentlemans

The Undead Gentleman is a complicated Tiki-adjacent drink, but I doubt you’ll be able to find a more fitting intoxicant out there.

Use of Your Streaming Subscription:

Although DBD is a spinoff, of sorts, of Netflix’s The Sandman, it’s a show that stands on its own two feet. It’s clever, quirky, entertaining, and overflowing with YA vibes. (Whereas The Sandman leans a bit older.) It’s exactly the kind of show I appreciate, and it’s great that it’s on Netflix where I can binge it in large chunks. I’m just hoping that the service gives it more of a chance than other genre shows in recent memory.

Mandy (she/her) is a manager at a tech company who lives in Austin, TX, with her husband, son, and dogs. She loves superheroes and pretty much any show or movie with “Star” in the name.
