Welcome back to our Friday Night Lights rewatch!

Last week, Mandy C. asked what I would do in Riggins’s shoes and if I would even try to explain to Coach Taylor, and I would not. If I was Tim, I would not expect Eric to believe me and trying to explain at that moment would probably just have made things worse.

Previously, Tim protected Julie from a hurricane and her own poor choices and got thrown out of the Taylor’s house over a misunderstanding, Lyla told Buddy that Pam is newly engaged, Landry and Tyra disagreed on Determining The Relationship, and sharing facilities with another football team does not go well.

Tim Riggins, a hot white dude with shaggy brown hair, drinks a beer with his eyebrows raised

On to the episode!

2.11 “Jumping the Gun”

After being kicked out of the Taylor’s house, Tim ends up sleeping in the locker room and gets in trouble for that when Eric arrives and sees him there. Tim eventually goes back to his house and finds both a delinquent notice on the front door and Billy nowhere to be found. He briefly talks to Jackie next door, who tells him that she and Billy broke up and that Billy lost his job. When Billy shows up at the house, he and Tim patch things up together over beers (so much underage drinking, Tim) and then go get all of Tim’s things from where he had been staying, along with a few grand that Tim finds under the couch that will help with their mortgage situation. After Julie finally tells her dad that Tim did nothing wrong and it was all her fault, Eric later arrives at the house to apologize to Tim for jumping to conclusions over everything with Julie and tells Tim that he acted very honorably in that situation.

Shelly learns she passed her real estate exam, and the family is all excited for her. That feeling doesn’t last very long, though, before Eric and Tami start getting annoyed about various actions taken by Shelly at the house, such as accidentally recording over a game tape for a TV show. In the middle of Eric being upset about that, he blurts out that they’re wondering when Shelly is going to leave, and she is upset and decides to go to a hotel. Shelly and Tami later meet to make up, and Shelly tells her that she has some good real estate leads in Dallas and is going to move up there.

At Dillon High, Eric tries to smooth things over with Coach Dickes, but all of his attempts are rebuffed. After Dickes virtually has a meltdown on field after a game-ending play, Eric approaches him in the office one more time to tell him he owes Coach Taylor and the team an apology for everything. Dickes tells Eric that his wife only has a few months to live but that Eric is right, he and the team, particularly Tim, deserve an apology.

Smash, his mother, and Noelle spend the episode listening to various college football recruiters pitch why Smash should choose them. In the end, TMU approaches Smash at the Alamo Freeze and Smash verbally commits to playing football for them like he’d always dreamed of doing.

Did the Panthers win?

It was a close call but did not end in a Panthers win.

MVP of the Week

Smash Williams, a young handsome Black man wearing a blue Panthers jersey and grinning confidently

Smash had both his girlfriend and multiple recruiters trying to influence his choice of where to play college football, but in the end, he made the choice that was right for him.

Saddest Play of the Week

I suspected something was going on with Coach Dickes aside from the tornado damage situation, but I did not expect it to be as dire as his wife having a terminal illness. It’s still not an excuse for his behavior, as he acknowledges, but it does put it into a bit more perspective.

Best Taylor Couple Moment

They don’t have many that don’t revolve around either complaining or arguing about Shelly, but the moment they have where Eric apologizes to Tami for asking Shelly when she was leaving and Tami both accepts his apology and acknowledges it will be nice to have their space back was cute in addition to being a realistic conclusion to that argument.

Tim Riggins’ Finest Moment

Tim had a rough go of it this episode, but I agree with Coach Taylor: he handled himself very well with Julie situation and everything else on the football field.

The Taylor Advice of the Week

Coach Taylor’s pragmatic talk with Smash of laying out Smash’s actual chances of playing football at Alabama, telling him to carefully think about his options, and to listen to and respect his mother definitely is the best Taylor advice of the week, and advice Smash definitely needed.

Post-Game Breakdown

  • I was starting to wonder if Julie was going to keep letting Riggins take the fall for her actions, but finally she did the right thing and confessed.
  • I don’t remember what actually happens next, but I am pretty positive that Tim and Billy stealing that money for the mortgage payment is SO not going to end well.
  • Good on Smash for bringing his mom flowers when he tells her about this decision, she deserved that.

My question for Kandis and you, lovely readers: on a scale of 1-10, how much trouble do you think Tim and Billy’s theft is going to cause?
