When Charlie Price’s father dies, he’s left to deal with his father’s failing shoe factory. Where there was once a huge demand for Price & Sons’ quality men’s brogues, times have changed and fashion is becoming disposable. The company is in huge trouble, unless Charlie can find a new niche market.

When Charlie meets the larger-than-life drag queen Lola, who laments that her thigh-high boots simply are not made to last, he realizes that he might just have found his niche market. But how is he going to sell this to the conservative folks in Northampton, whose work till now has been served in shades of brown?

This is based on a true story.

I can’t think of a better movie to watch with your friends, particularly if they love shoes as much as Lola loves shoes.

Recommended Level of Inebriation: Vodka Helps You Forget the Pain, Darling

Take a cue from Lola and have a cocktail or two. Perhaps not vodka shots like Lola, though, because you’ll want to stay conscious until the end.

I don’t know why it took me so long to watch this movie – I remember seeing the previews once upon a time and thinking it looked cute. It’s utterly delightful in every way – perhaps a bit predictable, but there’s nothing wrong with a happy ending. Lola’s character easily could have been a plot device or a mystical outsider with all the answers, but instead the movie chose to present her as a real person with real feelings and a real history. In turn, where other characters could have been portrayed as irredeemable bigots, there is character growth. And the shoes are two feet of tubular sex.
