About:

Title: Wolfs
Released: 2024

Fix: Action, One Night Adventure, Clooney & Pitt Together Again, Morally Grey Mysterious Loner Dudes
Platform: Apple TV+

Apple TV+ Summary:

Two rival fixers (George Clooney and Brad Pitt) cross paths when they’re both called in to help cover up a prominent New York official’s misstep. Over one explosive night, they’ll have to set aside their petty grievances—and their egos—to finish the job.

FYA Summary:

When a spur-of-the-moment decision leads to a dead body in a $10,000-a-night penthouse suite, New York District Attorney Margaret calls a number she hoped never to have to use. The man on the other end of the number arrives to help her “fix” her issue … shortly followed by another man, who the hotel owner hired. Begrudgingly, the two men work together to clean up the accidental death of a young man, and things are going OK—until the dead young man runs out into the night.

Familiar Faces:

George Clooney as Margaret’s Man and Brad Pitt as Pam’s Man

Clooney and Pitt are never better than when they’re playing off each other, be it the Ocean’s movies, Burn After Reading, or Wolfs. Their characters in this film aren’t much of a stretch for either of them—they’re a little mysterious, a little quirky, and a whole lot of bothered that they’re being forced to prove their competency to someone perhaps a little too much like themselves. The added nods to the guys’s ages (Clooney is 63 and Pitt is 60) adds an element of humor at their expense, but their chemistry and banter is just getting better as they age.

Austin Abrams as Kid

You might recognize Abrams as Dash from Dash & Lily or Ben from Paper Towns, but it took me a long while to realize that those are what I recognized him from. Especially when he spends much of the first half of the movie “dead” or running for his life through a winter’s night in a pair of tighty whities. Kid is supposed to be a kind of hapless doofus with heart, and Abrams embodies that nicely. He’s just got the right kind of face, you know?

Amy Ryan as Margaret

Ryan doesn’t get much screentime in this film after the first few scenes, but she brings an emotional quality to the movie that sets the tone for the entire thing.

Poorna Jagannathan as June

In my research for this post, I took a look at Jagannathan’s IMDB page and realized she has played a lot of doctors throughout her career. June is yet another of those roles, but this doctor has much more of a dangerous vibe. June is the doctor the underground turns to for help, and both Mans (Clooney and Pitt) have a long relationship with her. The realization that they both utilize her skills is a great plot twist that is all the more hilarious because of June’s disinclination to take their shit.

Couch-Sharing Capability: Gather the Twelve

Although Pitt is, apparently, a pretty crappy guy in his real life, I’ve always appreciated the quirky nature that comes across in most of his roles. And, like I said above, there’s nothing better than watching him play off of Clooney, and vice versa. If you, your friends, and/or your family enjoyed the Ocean’s movies, you and they are going to love this movie, too.

Recommended Level of Inebriation: Take the Edge Off

Wolfs is an action movie with a high level of tension, so I’d suggest drinking whatever helps you relax. You’re not going to be doing a whole lot of that on your own while watching this fast-paced film.

Use of Your Streaming Subscription: Buckle Up

For those of us who can’t get out to the movie theater that frequently anymore—thanks, child—it’s always great to see a first-run or close-to-it movie from the comfort of our own couch, mere steps away from our kiddo’s room. (That said, please visit your local theater as often as you can, if you can. We don’t want to lose them!) I adore the combination of Clooney and Pitt, and they can certainly carry an entire movie on the strength of their side-eye alone. Although it’s not their absolute best collaboration, it proves they continue to be major movie stars who know how to entertain. And it’s a great way to help pass the time until we get an Ocean’s Fourteen.

Mandy (she/her) is a manager at a tech company who lives in Austin, TX, with her husband, son, and dogs. She loves superheroes and pretty much any show or movie with “Star” in the name.
