Fix: Disney Channel Original Movies for the College-Aged Crowd
Platform: Netflix
Netflix Summary:
Ex-skateboarder Kim Matthews is transplanted to the world of alpine sports, an environment she finds foreign … until she tries snowboarding. When her Finnish friend Mikki offers to coach her, Kim is on her way to being tops in a new event.
FYA Summary:
I think you know this plot. Main character with possible tragic backstory finds themselves in a fish-out-of-water scenario. They develop a skill and/or talent improbably fast, which they need to win a competition and/or award because reasons. They have a love interest who may or may not add anything to the main plot line. You will lose count of number of montages with peppy pop/rock/punk music accompaniment.
Which is to say you’ve seen this movie before. And you will see it again. Because despite its predictability, it’s fun dammit. And sometimes you just want to see someone accomplish their dreams while simultaneously nabbing their dream guy.
Familiar Faces:
Felicity Jones as Kim
Despite the fact that I’ve seen Felicity Jones is a few movies before, I could not stop myself from thinking she was Elliot Page sporting an English accent.
Chuck Bass Ed Westwick as Johnny
Ed Westwick plays a rich guy. I know – quite the stretch role.
Nicholas Braun as Nigel
Nicholas has a fairly minor role in this movie, but since I adore him, he’s getting a shout out here.
This movie has quite a few other famous folks in it, including Bill Nighy, Brooke Shields, Bill Bailey and Sophia Bush.
Couch-Sharing Capability: Select Audience
I think we’ve all reached the stage in our lives where we know exactly which of our friends we can watch a snowboarding themed romcom with.
Recommended Level of Inebriation: Up to You
Whatever floats your boat, man! This is a movie that can be enjoyed any which way.
Use of Your Streaming Subscription: (Not) Guilty Pleasure
When I say this movie is like a Disney Channel Original, I don’t mean that as a slight. (I mean, you’re talking to a person who still knows literally all the words to “Super Nova Girl”. Seriously. Just ask and I’ll sing it for you. You don’t even need to get me drunk first.) It’s just the most convenient descriptor I can give someone to help them decide whether this movie is up their alley. Take a Disney Channel Original, add better acting, add mature content (think sexy times and booze) and voila! That is Chalet Girl for you. And while it’s not a movie I would have really sought out, it’s perfect to add to your queue to save for sometime when you need something light and fun.
