With a passing comment about my attraction to male cartoon characters, I inadvertently lead several of you to out your own proclivity for specific animated hunks. So I thought, why not write a post about the hottest male cartoon characters? Then we can all have a safe place to discuss our lust without shame. I mean, is crushing on someone animated any weirder than obsessing over guys who only exist within the paper and ink of a book? In fact, when I put it that way, it’s probably way less weird. Glad that we’ve cleared that up and agreed this is totally normal and not at all creepy. The below is my personal top 5 list of male cartoons hotties.

Aladdin from Aladdin

Of all the Disney movie males, Aladdin seems to always be my favorite. Prince Eric is a toolbox and the Beast has anger issues. John Smith was probably my favorite until Mel Gibson made it impossible for me to love him anymore. But Aladdin? He’s so scrappy and fun and brave. Plus, he looks good in baggy pants and a vest. Not many men can pull off that look. Plus, guy has a monkey, a flyer carpet AND Robin Williams as a BFF. If you show him yours, he can show you the world.

Mako from The Legend of Korra

While a lot of this list is based on a huge nostalgia factor, my love for Mako is as fresh as ten minutes ago. And he’s the only one on this list who is an active crush, since The Legend of Korra is in the midst of its run. He’s a totally mysterious loner dude – distant and aloof, with a tragic past. I mean, his parents were murdered in front of him by a mugger. As my friend Rachel put it, HE IS BATMAN. But a sexy, young, street urchin Batman. I don’t really know where I’m going with that, other than trying to convey to you that Mako is the dreamiest.

Dimitri from Anastasia

I don’t know what it is about scrappy con-men. Apparently I have a TYPE. At least, a type when it comes to cartoons. I type that I was completely unaware of until this moment. Blogging is kind of good for self-examination like that. Anyway, Dimitri is handsome, brave charming AND a ginger. Basically, irresistible.

The Baron Humbert von Gikkingen from The Cat Returns

Now, you may be thinking, I haven’t heard of this Baron or what is this movie? Or possible even, is that a cat in that picture? Why yes, it is a cat. The most brave and handsome cat ever to walk upright with a top hat and cane. First off, I’d like to point out that I originally told myself before starting this post, only one of my five picks could be an anthropomorphic animal. Which ended up being a lot harder than I expected. Again with the whole blogging leads to self-examination thing. But much more disturbing this time.

Anyway, The Cat Returns is a movie I didn’t see until college, when I was watching my way through the entire Miyazaki oeuvre. And throughout the movie I kept finding myself oddly attracted to The Baron. And it was starting to make me feeling strange? I mean, sure, he’s brave and looks quite dapper in his outfit. But I still couldn’t quite explain it. Until it hit me that the English version is dubbed with Cary Elwes’s voice. So you see, it’s not even my fault. If an anthropomorphic cat is going to do dashing things and talk with Wesley’s voice, I am going to be attracted to him.

Tuxedo Mask/Darien from Sailor Moon

The only cartoon in my history that really stands out to me as a true obsession would have to be Sailor Moon. I got up early before school to watch it. I recorded every available episode onto VHS tapes which my dad actually still has to this day. I bought any and ALL merchandise I could get my hands on. Which was extremely difficult, since this was before you could buy things on the internet. So as the main love interest of that series, Tuxedo Mask will always hold a special place in my heart. Never mind that as Darien he was kind of as asshole to Serena/Usagi and seemingly a decade older than her. As Tuxedo Mask he was dreamy and mysterious. And could always save the day with a well timed rose-toss and apt motivational speech.

Honorable Mentions

Now, even though I limited myself to five, there were still several attractive male cartoons who I felt were deserving of a shout out. Especially since I fear not mentioning a certain (cough-shirtless) one of these men would lead you all to burn this website to the ground.

Shang from Mulan, Flynn Rider from Tangled, Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Robin from Robin Hood, Gambit from X-Men, Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender

So, who’s on your list?
