Icebreaker
Let’s play a game of Truth. Who was your first kiss?
Questions
1. This book is packed with colorful characters. Who was your favorite?
2. Did Sarah Dessen’s portrait of grief resonate with you?
3. One of the themes running through the book is the idea of perfection. Macy strives for it, while characters like Wes and Delia find goodness in flaws. When relating her sister’s death to the huge pothole in the road, Delia says, “I didn’t want to fix it, to forget. It wasn’t something that was broken. It’s just… something that happened. And like that hole, I’m just finding ways, every day, of working around it. Respecting and remembering and getting on at the same time.” What’s your personal philosophy on the “holes” in life?
4. Did you find Macy’s mother to be a sympathetic character? Why or why not?
5. Were you a Macy or a Caroline in high school?
6. Did Wes and Macy’s relationship fill you with sa-woon? Why or why not?
7. Seriously, how hard did you first pump when Macy hopped over the desk in front of Bethany and Amanda and quit her job at the library?
8. Did you catch any Dessen Easter Eggs?
9. Macy confronts many personal realizations and questions in this book, from the idea that “being afraid and being alive are not the same thing,” to Kristy asking, “If your forever was ending tomorrow, would this be how you’d want to have spent it?” Which, if any, of Macy’s realizations impacted you the most?
