Are you ready for spoilers for Truly Devious and the second book in the series, The Vanishing Stair? If not, hop back to our first post for the series and start there!
Cover Story: Tick-Tock
I like how the “hand” on the wall is a clock’s hand. Could it be a clue?
The Deal:
At the end of Truly Devious book number two, Stevie Bell figured out the identity of Truly Devious. Now she’s trying to solve the mystery of where David Eastman went and uncover the whereabouts of Alice Ellingham. When a horrifying accident and impending snowstorm force an evacuation of Ellingham Academy, Stevie realizes it’s time to stay on the mountain and face the storm—and a murderer.
BFF Charm: Heck Yes
So we’re reusing the same BFF charm as before. So what? When your best friend is Stevie Bell, you’re going to want to tip your hat to her sleuthful status.
Swoonworthy Scale: 3
This might be the kissingest book of the Truly Devious series, but the mystery still takes precedence!
Talky Talk: Consistently Clueful
I’m so impressed with Maureen Johnson. Her quality of writing has not slacked one iota between Truly Devious #1 and #3! And the clues are all there, but we can’t put it together like Stevie can. Masterful storytelling, you guys.
Bonus Factor: Moose
If you know, you know.
Relationship Status: Like Whitney Houston Said
I will always love you, Stevie Bell! You are the wind beneath my wings, the quirkiest, funniest, most adorable heroine in murder mystery-land.
Literary Matchmaking
Catherine Lo’s Easy Prey is another high-stakes whodunit.
Dana Mele’s People Like Us is another boarding school murder mystery with a bonus of lots of LGBTQA+ representation.
And E. Lockhart’s The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks will give you a break from the mystery but keep you at boarding school.
FTC Full Disclosure: I bought a copy of this book and received neither money nor cocktails for writing this review (dammit!). The Hand on the Wall is available now.
